Hedge Maintenance

A worked using a hedge trimmer to shape hedge

For many properties hedges perform several important functions, both practically and aesthetically. As well as providing physical borders and screening, they also create a formal structure to contrast and complement the more informal aspect of the surrounding trees.

I’ve spent many thousands of hours dealing with hedges over the past 23 years. Generally, I aim to cut to British Standard 3998 2010, which recommends leaning hedges in from the bottom to the top by 3-5 degrees. This helps light ingress to the base of the hedge thereby promoting stronger thicker growth. Hedges that lean out often have weak sparse growth at the base. Of course, achieving this isn’t always possible or desirable, so having a good sense of possibilities and limitations is helpful. I’ve experienced cutting most species of hedging trees growing in Northern Europe and can guess fairly accurately how they will react to being cut. I also have some experience in the technique of laying hedges.

With the use of tripod ladders, long reach hedge cutters and occasionally MEWPs, all hedges can be accessed and worked on efficiently and safely. Surrounding plants and beds will be protected where necessary and all clippings and waste will be removed and recycled.

If you need some hedge work carried out and you live in the Croydon or Bromley area please get in touch. I’m happy to take a look, offer my advice and provide a no obligation quote.
